Detailed Description

Title card for the Terrestrial and Freshwater Ecosystems goal.  This shows a scientist hiking up a stream from the Akilik River drainage to set minnow traps for fish sampling. This is a stream type at the Boreal-Arctic transition of the Brooks Range, Noatak National Park and Preserve, Kobuk Valley National Park.

Alaska has diverse ecosystems with 3 million lakes, 3,000 rivers, 170 million acres of wetlands, an estimated 100,000 glaciers, and permafrost throughout the state.  USGS quantifies and forecasts the responses of wildlife species and their habitats for terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems in the Arctic. This includes studying caribou, loon specieslake trout, habitat for Dolly Varden char and beavers
