Elise Hinman

Elise Hinman (she/her/hers) is a Data Scientist for the USGS Water Resources Mission Area.

​​Elise joined the Data Science Branch in the USGS Water Mission Area in 2023. As a data scientist, Elise builds reproducible data workflows and contributes to R and Python code package development. She is dedicated to improving data accessibility and usability through high quality code documentation, user feedback, and outreach. 

​Elise received a Ph.D. in Biology at Syracuse University in 2018, where she evaluated the link between survival and carbon allocation in native and invasive woody plants in eastern deciduous forests. Her experience using the R programming language in her dissertation led Elise to join the Utah Division of Water Quality as a data analyst (and eventually environmental scientist), where she co-developed an R package and built several data visualization applications to support the state’s water quality assessment program. Elise then became an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education fellow in the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Water, where she contributed to R package development at the national level to assist states and tribes assess the quality of their lakes and rivers. ​
